The process of alchemy is one that has a long and storied history, dating back to the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians. The word “alchemist” itself is derived from the Ancient Greek ἁλοσκομιστῆς, itself derived from the Arabic term al-kimia, meaning “the art of transmutation.” The linguistics of this term are fascinating in that it was changed particularly to reflect the European notions of its practice, morphing from the Arab terms to the Greek and then to Latin, becoming alchimia. The term then made its way into English in the 13th century.

The etymology and morphology of the word “alchemist” is associated with concepts such as transmutation, chemistry, art, craft, alchemy, mysticism, science, occult, knowledge, natural philosophy, metallurgy, and experimentation.

To understand the various ways alchemists have been referred to in different cultures, their foreign equivalents must be examined.

In Arabic, alchemists can be referred to as kimiya’s, while in Cantonese they are known as jin, and in French they are known as alchimistes. Those skilled in the ancient art may also be called alkemisten in German, alchimisti in Italian, and alqumistas in
