In the early 20th century, modernism had a significant impact on Korean architecture, leading to the development of modernist buildings incorporating elements of modern technology such as steel structures, glass, and reinforced concrete. Postmodernist architecture also gained prominence in Korea in the latter half of the 20th century. Contemporary Korean architecture is characterized by a fusion of traditional and modern elements. Korean architects have been experimenting with new materials and technologies, while also incorporating traditional Korean design principles. Sustainability has also become a significant consideration in contemporary Korean architecture, with many architects focusing on energy-efficient and environmentally friendly designs.

As an architecture historian from Korea, I have undertaken a detailed analysis of the development of architecture in Korea. From the traditional vernacular architecture of the Joseon period to the modernist architecture of the last century, the history of Korean architecture has been shaped by a range of social, cultural, and technological factors. During the Joseon period, the traditional Korean architecture was built with a focus on functionality, durability, and aesthetics, reflecting the Confucian values of the time. In the late 19th century, Korean architecture began to be influenced by the introduction of European architectural styles, resulting in the emergence of a new style of architecture known as Korean Eclecticism. This style combined traditional Korean elements with elements of European architecture, such as decorative moldings and columns. The emergence of modernism in the early 20th century also had a significant impact on Korean architecture, leading to the development of modernist buildings which incorporated elements of modern technology, such as steel structures, glass, and reinforced concrete.

During this period, the traditional Korean architectural style was characterized by the use of curved lines and asymmetrical structures, as well as an emphasis on the harmony between the building and its natural surroundings. In the 19th century, the influence of Western architecture began to be felt in Korea, and a new style of building emerged, characterized by the use of straight lines and strict symmetry. In the 20th century, modernist and postmodernist architecture began to gain prominence in Korea, and today the country is home to a variety of different architectural styles.
